TIFFIN -- A 16-0 run ruined the Heidelberg University men's basketball team's upset bid of No. 7 Carroll as the Student Princes fell, 91-82. JCU's Luke Chicone and Heidelberg's
Isaiah Young went toe-to-toe, finishing with 29 and 28 points apiece.
Young's 28-point performance set a career-high for the reigning OAC Freshman of the Year.
Emmanuel Perdue added 15 while
Eric Panning finished with 13 points and 11 boards -- his seventh career double-double.
The game was dominated early by Heidelberg, as the Student Princes ignited the crowd with a 15-8 run to start. Undeterred, the Blue Streaks battled back with a 12-3 run of their own, taking a brief lead at 20-18.
Brady Bosma responded with a 3-pointer that kicked off a 16-4 'Berg run which featured 10 points from Young. Later, a
Jashun Cobb layup gave HU their largest lead of the game -- 46-32 with 3:59 to play in the half.
The Blue Streaks, boasting a lineup composed of a host of Division I transfers, answered with a game-altering 13-0 run to close the half. Heidelberg was fortunate to head to the locker room with a 46-45 lead.
Tied at 61 with 13 minutes left, Heidelberg gained separation with a 7-0 run, sparked by one of
Jacob Logsdon's three 3-pointers on the day. The advantage blossomed to as many as 11, with Young hitting a pull-up jumper that put HU ahead 76-65 with 7:42 to play.
The Blue Streaks roared back with a massive 16-0 run over a four-minute span that pushed them ahead by five.
With 2:26 remaining, Panning stopped the bleeding with a critical three-point play. Unfortunately, John Carroll responded with a jumper and layup to keep the Berg at bay as they still trailed by six points.
Led by Chicone, JCU maintained their comfortable lead down the stretch. Heidelberg, which shot 7-of-15 from beyond the arc in the first half, struggled from long range in the second half. HU was 3-of-18 after halftime.
The Student Princes outrebounded the Blue Streaks, 46-39.
JCU improved to 18-2 overall, 12-1 in the OAC. Heidelberg slipped to 13-7, 8-5 in the conference.
Heidelberg will be back in action on Saturday as they will travel to New Concord to take on Muskingum University. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
