ALMA, Mich. – The Heidelberg University wrestling team dropped a non-conference dual meet on Thursday at No. 6 Alma College. Heidelberg fell to 1-5 in dual meets with the loss whiel Alma improved to a perfect 6-0.
Starting off the match at 125, Josh Beacorn was pinned in the first period, giving the Scots the quick 6-0 advantage. Heidelberg quickly bounced back, however, as Ryan Hornack dominated his way to a 20-2 tech. fall in the 133-pound bout.
At 141, Joey Baitt battled but fell by a close decision of 6-3, giving Alma a 9-5 lead for the team scores. Damon Cheek helped the Berg pull back within one, as he picked up a 7-0 decision over JJ Sadler at 149.
Alma took the 157-pound bout by a tech. fall before Aaron Banko pulled off a major decision (8-0) over Kevin Briscoe at 165.
The host Scots were able to extend their lead in a big way when Myles Wright was pinned at 174 by Travis Heller, putting Heidelberg at a 20-12 deficit. Alma continued to pull away after they picked up a decision at 184 and a pin at 197 to build up a 29-12 lead over the Berg.
John Eckroth narrowly fell at 285, giving up a point to riding time to fall 3-2 in the evening's final bout.
The Student Princes will be back on the mats on Saturday, December 19th, when they travel to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Gator "Boots" Duals.
