Cheek victorious for Wrestling at W&J

WASHINGTON, Penn. – Damon Cheek led the Heidelberg wrestling team as they placed 3rd at the Washington & Jefferson Invitiational on Saturday. The senior won the 149 pound weight class and was the lone champion on the day for the Student Princes.

Cheek opened up his march to the title with a pin in 2:31 in his first match. He followed that up with a pair of close victories, 8-6 and 3-2, to earn a spot in the first-place match. In that bout against Nick Sutton of Thiel, Cheek emerged victorious with a 6-3 decision to capture the 149-pound title.

Ryan Hornack and Myles Wright each earned a second-place finish in their respective weight classes.

Hornack, wrestling in the 133-pound weight class, opened up his day with a pair of pins before he defeated Zach Bylkbashi of Washington & Jefferson by a 7-4 decision in the semifinals. He came up just short in the first-place match, though, falling by a 3-1 decision to take second place.

At 174, Wright was dominant as he won three matches to reach the first-place bout. He won an 11-3 major decision before picking up a pair of pins to reach the title bout. Wright wasn't able to carry that momentum in the first-place bout, however, as he was pinned in 3:30 to settle for second place.

Other notable placers for the Berg included Brandon Conrad (4th place, 133), Justin Kihn (3rd place, 141), Joey Baitt (4th place, 141), Aaron Banko (3rd place, 165), Tyler Fahrer (4th place, 165), Rickey Bruce (3rd place, 197), and Christian Climer (5th place, 197).
