SB: Fun at Frann's Field in finale

TIFFIN -- With two walk-off wins -- a nailbiter and a run-rule -- the Heidelberg University softball team wrapped up the No. 2 seed in the Ohio Athletic Conference tournament. The Berg beat Wilmington College on Senior Day -- 3-2 in the opener, and 8-0 in six innings in the nightcap. Heidelberg's record improved to 25-13 overall, 13-5 in the conference.

KEY STATS

Kaitlyn Moore had a day. Offensively, she homered and drove in three. In the circle, she picked up two wins, allowing two runs in a combined 13 innings of work. She struck out six.

Her sister Casey Moore was 3-for-4 with a home run.

Katlin Keys was 4-for-6 with two doubles and a triple.

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 3-7-0 Wilmington 2-7-0

Abbey McKee led off the bottom of the second with a line drive to left. After moving to second on a sac bunt, she was lifted for pinch runner Abby Barno. With two outs, Kaitlin Keys drove a triple that rolled to the wall in right center, scoring Barno and giving HU a 1-0 lead.

Wilmington (13-19, 4-14) threatened in the third, loading the bases with just one out. Heidelberg starter Kaitlyn Moore escaped the jam allowing just one run, coming off an RBI groundout.

The Quakers scratched across a second run in the fifth. A leadoff infield single was followed by a sac bunt. Jillia Cook drove a single to right center to put runners at the corners for Mariyah Burkhardt. Burkhardt delivered with a RBI double to left center, giving the Quakers a 2-1 edge.

Casey Moore led off the bottom of the sixth crushing a solo home run to left center, evening the score at two.

Keys led off the bottom of the seventh with a double to right center -- her team-leading 12th of the season. She was lifted for pinch runner Lauren Wolf, and moved to third on a sac bunt. Bailey Smith played the role of hero with a walkoff infield single, giving the Student Princes a win on Senior Day.

Keys and Smith each had two hits for the Berg in the win. Kaitlyn Moore (13-6) tossed seven innings, scattering seven hits and striking out three.

GAME TWO: Heidelberg 8-11-0 Wilmington 0-4-0

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Casey Moore lined a single to center. McKee crushed a double off the top of the fence in left center to score Moore. On the next pitch, Kaitlyn Moore belted a no-doubt homer to right for a 3-0 lead.

A Kaitlyn Moore single in the third pushed the HU lead to 4-0.

The hot hitting continued into the fourth, when Keys led off the inning with another two-bagger to right center. A sac bunt pushed her to third, and Smith followed with a four pitch walk. With runners at the corners, Renee Lovett lifted a sac fly to center for a 5-0 lead. Heidelberg added to the lead when Casey Moore blooped a single to center, plating Smith.

Leah Bouillon was walked in the sixth, and later scored when Lovett smacked a triple to right center, extending the HU lead to 7-0. With the run rule in effect, Miller slapped a single through the right side to drive in Lovett and send Heidelberg home with a senior day sweep.

Moore (14-6) went the distance in the circle for the Student Princes, throwing six innings of four-hit ball. She struck out three.

SENIOR DAY:  In between games, the Berg honored seniors Bailey Smith, Haylee Patel, Kaitlin Keys, Renee Lovett, and Abbey McKee for their contributions to Heidelberg Softball. Over their four years, the quintet has made the OAC Tournament four times, winning in 2015 and 2016. They also won the 2015 OAC Regular Season and the NCAA Regional Championship.

Following the games, Frann Zverina was on hand to congratulate the 2018 seniors. The quintet is the first class to have played all four seasons at Frann's Field, named after Zverina, the lead donor.

UP NEXT:  The Berg will not play Sunday at Hiram College as previously scheduled.

The Ohio Athletic Conference tournament will be held at No. 1 seed Otterbein University next weekend. Heidelberg will open with No. 3 seed Ohio Northern. The Cardinals open with No. 4 seed Muskingum.
