SB: Moore's five hits helps Berg split

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University softball team split a pair of games with The College of Wooster on Sunday afternoon. The visitors won game one, 5-2, before the Berg rebounded with a 7-4 win in the nightcap.

The Berg is now 22-12, while the Fighting Scots move to 12-20.

Casey Moore had five hits on the day, including a perfect 4 for 4 with 2 RBI in game two.

GAME ONE: Wooster 5-8-1 Heidelberg 2-5-2

In the third, the Fighting Scots rattled four straight singles off HU starter Kaitlyn Moore for a 2-0 lead. Wooster added to their lead in the top of the fourth, scoring two unearned runs.

Leah Bouillon was hit by a pitch to start the fifth. After moving to second on a beautiful sac bunt by Bailey Smith, Bouillon scored on a single through the right side off the bat of Shelby Miller.

The visitors responded to the HU run with a run of their own in the top of the sixth, courtesy of a sac fly.

The Student Princes scored once in the seventh, but could not keep the rally going as Wooster took game one.

Kaitlyn Moore (11-6) took the loss in the circle for the Berg. The sophomore struck out five and gave up two earned runs over 3.1 innings of work. Vanessa Macias came on in relief of Moore. The freshman allowed just three hits and one run over 3.2 innings.

GAME TWO: Heidelberg 7-12-0 Wooster 4-12-2

A two-out double to left put the visitors ahead 1-0 after the first inning in game two. Undaunted, Heidelberg put runners at second and third for clean-up hitter Abbey McKee. Following a nine pitch at bat, the senior ripped a double to the fence in left center, scoring Miller and Casey Moore.

After the Fighting Scots tied the game in the third, HU took the lead in the bottom of the frame. Renee Lovett led off the inning with a double over the left fielder's head and advanced via sac bunt. Casey Moore laid down a squeeze bunt to bring home Lovett, and scored when McKee drilled a double just inside the left field line.

Haylee Patel padded the Student Prince lead with an RBI single, just out of the reach of the diving Wooster centerfielder. Heidelberg held a 5-2 lead after three.

Miller put the Berg up four with a bloop single to center, scoring Joanna Catalano.

Wooster strung together five straight singles to in the fifth, cutting the deficit to 6-4. Macias came on in relief of starter Morgan Daniels, and with the bases loaded, struck out Olivia Johnson to end the inning.

Casey Moore gave Heidelberg an insurance run in the sixth, smacking an RBI single through the 5-6 hole, plating Lovett.

Daniels (4-0) earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings. Macias tossed a solid 2.1 relief innings, helping Heidelberg earn the split.
