UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS -- The Heidelberg University softball team snuck away from Cleveland with a midweek split, dropping the first game, 4-3, before winning the nightcap, 7-6. Shelby Miller led the Student Princes with four hits while Abbey McKee tallied three RBI.
With the split, Heidelberg (18-8, 8-2) lost sole possession of first place in the Ohio Athletic Conference. John Carroll moved to 11-10, 6-4.
GAME ONE: JCU 4-7-0 BERG 3-4-0
The Blue Streaks got on the board in the fourth, then took the lead in the sixth inning. Hannah Mizener hit a three-run homer off Moore, who struck out five.
In the top of the seventh, The Berg stranded the tying run at third.
GAME TWO: BERG 7-9-3 JCU 6-13-1
Scoreless in the third, Heidelberg exploded for five runs. Renee Lovett singled and moved to third on a double by Miller. Casey Moore drove in two with a single before McKee hit a two-run blast to left. Kaitlin Keys closed the scoring with a double to center that drove in Haylee Patel.
Up 5-3, HU tacked on two more in the sixth. With two outs, Miller hit her first collegiate home run -- a two-run jack to right.
The Student Princes return to the road on Saturday for an OAC doubleheader at Mount Union, weather permitting.
