TIFFIN -- Back on Frann's Field for the first time in 12 days, the Heidelberg University softball team swept Capital University on Thursday afternoon. The Student Princes cruised to an 8-2 win in game one, before taking the nightcap, 5-4, in eight innings.
Winners of five straight, the Berg improves to 15-7, 5-1 in the OAC. The Crusaders slip to 6-16, 2-4.
GAME ONE: Heidelberg 8-13-3 Capital 2-7-0
After the Crusaders drew first blood, HU evened the game in the bottom of the first. Lovett led off with a line drive to left and advanced to second on a sac bunt from Shelby Miller. Lovett scored on an RBI single by Casey Moore.
Capital took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but the lead would be short-lived. A successful squeeze bunt by Keys plated Haylee Patel in the bottom of the frame.
The Student Princes pounded out a four-spot in the fifth inning. Lovett led off the inning with a bunt single and stole second. Casey Moore singled home Lovett for a 3-2 advantage. After a double by McKee, Kaitlyn Moore drilled a triple to right, scoring both her sister and McKee. One batter later, Patel singled home Moore.
Heidelberg tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth. Four batters were called for making contact with the ball outside the batter's box. Three of the calls came on consecutive hitters.
Kaitlyn Moore allowed just on earned run in six innings of work. The sophomore (8-4) struck out six, walking none.
GAME TWO: Heidelberg 5-9-0 Capital 4-12-3
McKee pushed the Student Princes out in front with a sac fly to center in the first.
Keys lined a double off the third base bag, scoring Patel for a 2-0 lead in the fourth. Keys was lifted for pinch runner Abby Barno, who moved to third on a wild pitch and later scored on a passed ball.
Capital took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, started by a Erica Ogden solo shot to right center. Capital added a run on an infield single, and took the lead when Alyx Slusher grounded a ball through the right side, driving in two runs.
Miller liened a single to center in the bottom half of the inning. McKee launched a double off the base of the fence in left center to score Miller and tie the game at 4.
In the bottom of the eighth, Keys worked a walk. With two outs, Joanna Catalano worked her way to a full count, which released Keys from first on the payoff pitch. Catalano walked, but the Capital catcher threw to second, where it got past the shortstop and allowed Keys to scamper to third. Lovett grounded a ball to the right side, and the Capital second baseman made a terrific diving stop. However, she could not get the ball out of her glove in time to make a play on Lovett, scoring Keys and sending HU home victorious.
Morgan Daniels (3-0) picked up the win in relief for the Berg. The junior tossed three innings of shutout ball, allowing just two hits.
"Capital is a good team and to come out with two wins against them is always a great feeling," said head coach Kelli Williams. "We did a good job of putting pressure on their defense and not giving up … Pitching did a great job today as well."
Heidelberg hosts Otterbein on Saturday for a doubleheader against the Cardinals. Game time is slated for 1 p.m.
