- Softball sweeps on day three in Florida
- Leah Bouillon paces Berg offense with 4 RBI
- Moore and Macias earn wins in the circle
KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Looking for its first sweep of the 2018 season, the Heidelberg University softball team did just that on Tuesday afternoon with wins over WPI and Simmons. The Berg offense put up double-digit runs in a 10-4 win over WPI, before dropping Simmons in the nightcap, 5-3.
Heidelberg improves to 4-2 on the year with four games remaining on the Florida schedule.
GAME ONE: Heidelberg 10 WPI 4
A five-run sixth inning lifted the Berg over the Goats in their first game of the day. The bottom of the order did most of the damage for the Student Princes, as Leah Bouillon and Kaitlin Keys combined for a sparkling 5 for 8, 6 RBI game.
WPI scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth for a slim 3-2 lead. The lead would be short-lived as the Berg had an answer in the next two innings.
Casey Moore and Abbey McKee led off the bottom of the inning with back-to-back solo home runs. After a pitching change, Kaitlyn Moore welcomes the new WPI pitcher with a double. She later scored on a Bouillon single.
A Goat run in the bottom of the fifth would not bother the Berg. Four straight hits from Kaitlyn Moore, Keys, Bouillon, and Haylee Patel inflated the Heidelberg lead to 10-4 in the sixth. The Bouillon single capped off a 4 RBI performance by the shortstop.
GAME TWO: Heidelberg 5 Simmons 3
The Sharks added two runs in the third inning off HU starter Vanessa Macias.
The Berg answered in the bottom of the frame when a leadoff walk was issued to Lovett. Lovett stole second to get into scoring position for Casey Moore. Moore roped a double to left center, scoring Lovett and tying the game at two.
Simmons took a 3-2 lead, but once again the Berg bats answered back. Bouillon led off the inning with a double and moved to third on a bunt single by Patel. Patel stole second, allowing Bouillon to score on a throwing error by the Simmons catcher. After advancing to third, Patel raced home on a groundout from Kaylie Rowland. The freshman is 2 for 3 in pinch hit at bats, and has recorded an RBI in all three.
Desperate for an insurance run, Heidelberg got what they needed in the sixth. Lauren Wolf pinch ran for Macias, who led off the inning with a single. Wolf moved to second on a passed ball and advanced on a sac bunt. Patel laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Wolf and put the Berg ahead 5-3.
A leadoff single by the Sharks would do no damage, as the Berg held on for the victory. Macias (1-2) earned her first win of the season. The freshman scattered six hits over seven innings of work.
Following the off day on Wednesday, Heidelberg will face off wil Thiel and Muhlenberg on Thursday. Game times are scheduled for 1:30 and 3:45 p.m.
