SB: Berg splits on Opening Day

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University softball team opened its 2018 campaign with a thunderous 10-2 win over Westminster, before suffering a 10-2 defeat at the hands of DeSales on Sunday afternoon.

KEY STATS:

Shelby Miller: 4 for 6, 2 RBI
Casey Moore: 2 for 4, 2 RBI, 2 BB
Abbey McKee: 2 for 4, 3 RBI, HR

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 10 Westminster 2 (5 innings)

The Titans wasted no time, scoring two runs in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Kaitlyn Moore and the rest of the Berg would settle in after the inning, scoring 10 unanswered runs.

With two outs, McKee singled sandwiched between walks to the Moore sisters. Haylee Patel capitalized with the bases loaded, cutting the lead in half with an RBI single. Sophomore Kennedy Conney followed with a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at two.

Heidelberg's big blow came in the bottom of the second off the bat of McKee. With two on and two out, McKee ripped her first home run of the season, 20th of her career, extending the Student Prince lead to 5-2.

After failing to score in the third, HU tacked on three more in the fourth. Casey Moore brought home Renee Lovett and Miller, who both reached on singles, with a 2 RBI triple. Moore scored when her sister, Kaitlyn, singled her home.

Two Student Princes reached on errors to lead off the bottom of the fifth. Lovett and Miller drove in the final two runs, having the run rule in effect and give Heidelberg the victory.

Kaitlyn Moore earned the win in the circle, scattering six hits over five innings and fanning three.

With the win, Heidelberg has won its last five opening day games. HU capitalized on Titan mistakes, scoring five unearned runs.

GAME TWO: DeSales 10 Heidelberg 2 (5 innings)

Errors sabotaged the Student Princes in the nightcap, as Heidelberg committed 12 errors in the loss. A disastrous fifth inning, where the Berg made numerous errors in the frame, hurt HU in a mercy rule loss.

The Bulldogs held a 3-0 lead after four innings, but HU came charging back. Patel led off the fifth with a single and advanced to second on a sac bunt. Lovett singled, leaving runners at the corners for Miller. Patel scampered home on a wild pitch and Miller drove in Lovett with a single.

DeSales answered, scoring seven unearned runs in the bottom half of the inning to cruise to the victory.

Freshman Vanessa Macias suffered the loss in the circle for the Berg.
