Three straight wins for men's soccer

TIFFIN -- Joseph Tallarico's goal proved to be the difference maker as the Heidelberg University men's soccer team battled to a 1-0 win over Denison University on Saturday afternoon. The junior netted his first career game-winning goal to help HU stay undefeated in its home opener.

The Student Princes move to 3-0 for the first time since 2013. Denison falls to 1-3.

The Berg had its chances to strike early, with multiple corner kicks in the first 15 minutes, but could not find the back of the net. Rodrigo Meza tallied four shots in the period as the Big Red defense stood tall.

Still scoreless, the visitors had a chance to take the lead heading into the break, but the HU defense blocked a shot to preserve the shutout.

Heidelberg's lone goal came in the 73rd minute off a corner kick by freshman John Gall. Gall connected with Tallarico to give the Student Princes the lead, and ultimately the victory. The score was the junior's seventh career goal.

HU keeper Jake Kress recorded two saves in the match, both coming early in the second half. Kress improves to 3-0 with seven saves and a 0.00 GAA this season.

The Student Princes have tallied an assist on three of their five goals this season. All five goals and three assists have come from eight different players.

Kress and the Student Prince defense have picked up three clean sheets so far -- one shy of their 2016 total.

Head coach Pat Svihlik: "We told the guys this week that Denison is a tough team and we needed to match that toughness ... When we got our opportunities, we need to convert -- and we were able to get one in the second half.   I'm very proud of our guys.  We're happy now, but our focus moving forward needs to be on improving every day."

After an eight-day hiatus, the Tricolor is back in action on Sept. 17. The team will travel to Mt. St. Joseph University for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
