MLAX: Berg falls in home finale

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team suffered a 21-4 loss at the hands of Capital University in the final home game of 2018. The Crusaders controlled the tempo from the start, improving to 8-5, 4-2 in the OAC. HU falls to 7-7, 1-5 in the conference.

After Capital scored the first four goals, sophomore Nick Selfridge netted his 34th goal of the season to put the Student Princes on the board.

Alex Bruder raced nearly the full length of the field, and connected with Liam Weaver who slipped a shot past the Capital goalie, cutting the deficit to 5-2. The Crusaders took any momentum out of the Princes, scoring the next 11 goals before the break. The visitors took a 16-2 lead into halftime.

The Crusaders kept pace in the second half, allowing just two more goals. Chris Storrs tallied his third goal of the season with a strike in the third. Matt Wernerspach earned his second assist of the day, feeding Selfridge for a goal in the fourth.

Capital outshot the Berg, 72-29. Additionally, the Student Princes committed 26 turnovers.

Prior to the game, Heidelberg honored its lone senior, Matt Wernerspach. Wernerspach has played a key role for the Berg over the last two seasons, scoring 90 points to date. The two-time captain scored the first ever goal in program history at Bethany last season. Wernerspach also scored the game-winning goal in HU's first win last season at Monmouth in double overtime.

The Berg hits the road on Wednesday when they travel to John Carroll. First face off in University Heights is slated for 7 p.m.
