TIFFIN -- Backed by a six-goal performance by senior captain Matt Wernerspach, the Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team cruised to a 24-7 win over La Roche College on Saturday afternoon. Eight Student Princes scored in the victory as the team improves to 7-4 on the season.
In addition to Wernerspach's six goals, sophomore Nick Selfridge scored five goals and added three assists. Brock Hodson, Noah Messerall, and Patrick McCarthy all recorded hat tricks, with Hodson registering three assists as well.
The Berg broke out to a 6-0 lead in the first. The Redhawks would score twice before the end of the first, but HU would shut down any further momentum.
Adding seven goals in the second, Heidelberg held a commanding 13-3 lead at the break. Two of Messerall's three goals came in the second period.
Selfridge and Eli Haire scored quick back-to-back goals to open up the third, keeping all momentum in Heidelberg's favor. The Student Princes tacked on five more goals in the third, two from Hodson.
Freshman goalie Alex Bruder turned in another stellar performance in goal, making seven saves while allowing just three goals.
Despite racking up the penalty minutes, the HU defense held La Roche to 0-15 on man-up opportunities. The Berg netted two man-down goals in the match, one from Wernerspach and one from Liam Weaver.
With his six goals today, Wernerspach remains tied atop the OAC leaderboard for goals (35). With 31 goals, Selfridge ranks fourth.
