TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's lacrosse team dropped its home opener on Thursday, falling to Calvin College, 8-6. After scoring five times in the opener, freshman Nick Selfridge tallied four goals in the loss at Hoernemann Stadium.
The Student Princes drop to 0-2 on the season while Calvin improved to 1-1.
Selfridge wasted no time getting HU on the board first in their home debut. His goal one minute into the game from Patrick McCarthy gave the Student Princes a quick 1-0 lead.
Calvin evened the score with 7:41 remaining in the first quarter on a goal by Michael Winkler.
Selfridge put the Berg back on top with a man-up goal with five minutes left in the first quarter. Just over a minute later, Selfridge struck again for the hat trick in the opening period.
Calvin scored three times in the second quarter to take a slim 4-3 lead at the half.
The visitors tacked on two goals in the third and one early in the fourth before the home team answered. The goals came in a stretch where the Knights scored six straight.
McCarthy pulled the Student Princes to within three with his second goal of the season. The shot came with just over 11 minutes to play. Winkler's third goal of the game, coming at the 8:43 mark of the fourth, put Calvin up 8-4.
In the final minute of the game, Owen Carter scored his second goal of the season on a shot that trickled through Calvin goalie Mitchell Caldwell. After winning the ensuing faceoff, Selfridge scored his fourth goal of the game with 14 seconds left.
Heidelberg goalie Max Rennillo made 13 saves as the Knights put up 36 shots. Caldwell made three saves in his first collegiate win.
Ryan Sinnema caused six turnovers and picked up five ground balls. Selfridge was 9-for-16 on faceoffs and seven ground balls.
Heidelberg will travel to Monmouth College (Ill.) on Wednesday. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
