DEFIANCE -- The Heidelberg University men's basketball team was unable to hold on to an early lead, falling to Penn State - Behrend, 77-62, at the 44th annual Purple and Gold Tournament, hosted by Defiance College. The Student Princes led by as many as 12 in the first half, but struggled to find an offensive rhythm in the second half.
The Student Princes fell to 3-9 on the year while Behrend improved to 9-1.
Three players finished in double figures for Heidelberg. Josh Dixon had a team-high 13 points, while Phariz Watkins and Dylan Woods finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Off the bench, Alex Arellano contributed a game-high eight rebounds.
Behrend out-shot Heidelberg by a considerable margin -- 43.1% to 37.9% from the floor, including 38.5% to 20% from beyond the arc. The Nittany Lions were 23-for-27 from the foul line, while Heidelberg was 7-for-9.
After their large first-half lead evaporated, The Berg still held a five-point lead midway through the second half. Behrend, which had received votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll earlier this season, closed the game on a 33-11 run.
Behrend was buoyed by 21 points from Mike Fischer and 20 points from Justin Gorny.
Heidelberg out-rebounded their opponent 37-34.
The Student Princes will face either Geneva College or host Defiance College in the consolation game of the Purple and Gold Classic on Saturday. Tipoff is slated for 1 p.m.
