AUSTINTOWN, Ohio -- Austin Baker continued his excellence punting for the Heidelberg University football team on Saturday at John Carroll University. For his efforts, in addition to finding a spot on ESPN's Sportscenter, Baker was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in three weeks and the fourth time of his career. In addition to his conference recognition, Baker was tabbed to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his efforts.
Baker, who earned All-American honors in 2017, has continued to blister the football on his punts. On his fourth of eight punts at JCU, Baker found himself punting from his own five yard line. With the snap, Baker boomed a 95-yard punt to the other end zone, setting a new NCAA Division III record. The kick surpassed a 91-yarder by Maranatha Baptist's Gunnar Rastenburg, set in 2014. The play garnered national attention airing on ESPN College Football, Sportscenter, and Yahoo College Football among others.
In addition to the record-breaking punt, Baker collected 405 punting yards, good for an average of 50.6 ypp and one downed inside the John Carroll 20 yard line.
Baker continues to lead the nation in yards per punt, with 44.2 ypp.
The senior punter will return to Hoernemann Stadium for his final game on Saturday, November 10 at 1:30 p.m. The Student Princes will battle Ohio Northern for the eighth edition of the Bendekovic Bowl, in addition to Military Appreciation and Senior Day.
