A balanced one-through-nine approach on offense, coupled with a strong pitching staff has lifted the Heidelberg University baseball team into the postseason for the first time since 2015. As co-champion of the Ohio Athletic Conference, the Student Princes will compete in this weekend's four-team, double-elimination tournament -- hosted by Baldwin Wallace University.
Head Coach Chad Fitzgerald relied on a number of upperclassmen in his everyday lineup. In the outfield, seniors Matt Psychas (.388, 5 HR, 39 RBI) and Kane Bateman (.384, 12 2B, 30 RBI) have been stalwarts in left and right. After Keaton Mark's promising sophomore season was halted by injury, Mike Warden and Robert Hunt have split time in center.
The infielders have performed consistently throughout the course of the season. Three of the everyday infielders are juniors -- third baseman Kyle Jenkins (.367, 3 HR, 43 RBI), shortstop Zach Doran (.323, 16 RBI, 16 SB) and second baseman Tyler Smith (.360, 8 2B, 17 RBI). The lone senior is first baseman Parker Fronk (.296, 3 HR, 29 RBI).
Behind the plate, Marc Ochoa (.344, 6 HR, 40 RBI) has thrown out 45.5% of would-be base-stealers -- tops in the OAC among full-time catchers.
Alex Sir Louis (8-1, 3.00 ERA, 66 IP) and Trevor Adkins (5-4, 5.57 ERA, 56 K) anchor Fitzgerald's rotation. The starting rotation has also included Tristan Phillips (5-0, 3.32 ERA), Mac Spears (1-1, 6.24 ERA) and Alec Zoeller (1-2, 6.55 ERA). Out of the bullpen, Mason Metz (14 APP, 1.74 ERA) and Brady Knizner (15 APP, 3.23 ERA) have been important pieces of the staff. In his senior season, closer Joey Wenning (17 APP, 8 SV) has led the team in appearances and leads the OAC in saves.
