BASE: Ochoa bops three doubles as Berg wins

PORT CHARLOTTE, Florida -- Marc Ochoa had four hits, including three doubles, and five RBI as the Heidelberg University baseball team defeated Mitchell College, 7-2. The Student Princes wrapped up the first half of their Florida team with a 3-2 overall, 3-1 in the Sunshine State.

Freshman Alec Zoeller picked up the win in his first collegiate outing.

In addition to Ochoa's four-hit day, Parker Fronk and Matt Psychas each collected two hits on the day.

Heidelberg answered the bell in a big way. After Kane Bateman reached on an error, the Student Princes loaded the bases on base hits by Kyle Jenkins and Matt Psychas. Marc Ochoa cleared the bases with a double to the wall in left center.

After dancing out of trouble in the first, Zoeller (1-0) allowed a run in the second. After that, the southpaw settled in and found his groove. He worked 5+ innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. He struck out four.

Ochoa doubled home Psychas in the third, then repeated the feat in the fifth, pushing Heidelberg's lead out to 5-1.

In the 6th, the Student Princes tacked on two more. Walks to Jake Davis and Zach Doran followed by a single from Tyler Smith loaded the bases. Bateman was hit by a pitch, plating Davis. Doran scored in a fielder's choice by Jenkins.

Zoeller departed with two on in the 6th after a misplay on the infield. Reliever Mason Metz used a strike 'em out - throw 'em out double play -- with Ochoa throwing behind the runner at first. The Mariners managed to eke one run across in the frame, which closed out the scoring.

Metz, Justin Liserio, Brady Knizner and Joey Wenning each worked an inning of scoreless relief.

Mitchell starter Drew Daley lasted 4.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on five hits … Catcher Markus Melendez had three hits.

The Student Princes have sent four freshmen out to pitch for the varsity squad this season. Each of the four -- Brady Knizner, Ryan Keane, Cayden Rollins, and Zoeller -- recorded their first collegiate out via strikeout.

Ochoa is the first 'Berg player with a three double (a triple-double?) day since Ricardo Lizcano had three at Manchester on March 17, 2012.

In Florida: Heidelberg is 2-0 since the team changed its parking location at North Charlotte Regional Park … HU is 3-1 on days when 1980s country megahit "Bop" by Dan Seals -- the 1986 CMA Single of the Year -- is played before or during the game.

After an off day Tuesday, Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday with an 11 a.m. matinee against Moravian College
