WILMINGTON -- It took a few innings, but once the bats woke up, it was hard to stop the Heidelberg University baseball team. Heidelberg swept Wilmington College on Saturday -- 14-6 and 22-2 -- and improved their prospects at a berth in the OAC tournament in the process.

The Berg improved to 22-13 (9-7 OAC) with the victories.

GAME ONE: BERG 14-13-1 WILM 6-11-5

Wilmington led 3-0 after four and maintained that lead until the Heidelberg bats awoke in the seventh.

Joe Walton and Phil Frazier led off the seventh with singles. Joey Rydzewski wore a pitch to load the bases for Evan Long. Long, Heidelberg's OAC Clyde Lamb award winner, delivered a two-run single. Next, Matt Psychas laid down a bunt single and moved to third on an error by the third baseman. On the play, HU took a 4-3 lead as Rydzewski and Long scored on the blunder. Kyle Slovick closed the scoring in the five-run inning with a sacrifice fly.

Up 5-3, The Berg tacked on two more runs in the eighth. Walton and Frazier singled again before Rydzewski reached on a run-scoring bunt that was misplayed by the first baseman. Long followed with an RBI groundout.

In the ninth, the Heidelberg bats exploded for seven. Darrin Shirk reached on a bunt single, Kyle Jenkins walked and Parker Fronk was hit by a pitch. Walton followed with a bases-clearing double. After a walk and a pitching change, Rydzewski contributed an RBI single, as did Long. Psychas followed with a double that drove in two more.

Wilmington managed three runs in the ninth.

Adkins, as he has been seemingly all season long, was stellar. The lefty transfer scattered seven hits in eight innings, allowing three runs. He did not walk a batter and struck out nine.

GAME TWO: BERG 22-21-1 WILM 2-12-3

The Heidelberg bats picked up where they left off in game one, scoring four times with two outs in the first. Long doubled and scored on a single by Shirk. Frazier followed with a double that plated Slovick. Parker Fronk rapped a two run single to put HU up 4-0.

In the second, HU carded a snowman. Rydzewski and Long singled in front of back-to-back two-baggers by Psychas and Slovick. After another Frazier single, Fronk brought in two more with a basehit. An additional two runs came in when Marc Ochoa reached on an error. Ochoa scored run numero ocho on a wild pitch.

Up 12-0, the good guys hung a five spot on the Fighting Quakers in the third. Slovick doubled, Shirk walked, Frazier doubled, and once again, the Student Princes were off and running. Ochoa doubled home two before Rydzewski plated a run with a single. Long ended the scoring with a sacrifice fly to center.

Two bases-loaded walks made it 19-1 in the fifth. With a bevy of substitutions entering the game, Heidelberg scored three in the seventh. Official statistics for the end of the game will be made available in the next few days.

Alex Sir Louis (5-0) cruised to another win. He went six strong innings, allowing one run on eight hits. He struck out three.

PLAYOFF PICTURE: With two OAC games remaining, Heidelberg is tied with BW for the fourth-and-final spot in the OAC tournament.
