BASE: Berg takes two at ONU

ADA -- It was cold.

It was windy.

It was a sweep.

The Heidelberg University baseball team opened the Ohio Athletic Conference slate with a road sweep over rival Ohio Northern University -- 8-6 in the opener and 10-3 in the nightcap. Heidelberg was outhit in the opener, but took advantage of four Polar Bear errors (Bearrors?). In the second game, The Berg dug out of an early hole and powered its way to victory -- also utilizing six ONU miscues.

Heidelberg has won six straight, moving to 12-3 overall and 2-0 in OAC action. The Polar Bears are 10-6, 0-2.

Kyle Slovick had a day at the plate. He was 4-for-7 and drove in five. Zach Cleaver also banged out four hits on the day. Matt Psychas had three hits, including a three-run homer.

The wins marked HU's first sweep in Ada since 2012.  

GAME ONE: BERG 8-7-1 ONU 6-13-4

Heidelberg plated a pair in the the second and third, taking a 4-0 lead. In the second, Matt Psychas singled and Kyle Slovick doubled to start. Parker Fronk delivered a sacrifice fly before Zach Cleaver added an RBI single. In the third, Slovick singled home Justin DeWitt. On the play, an error allowed Evan Long to race home.

Game one starter Cameron Deemer (5-0) ran into trouble in the bottom of the fifth. Two hits, two walks and an error allowed the hosts to scratch out three runs. Deemer allowed seven hits and four walks in five innings, striking out a pair.

The Berg erupted for four in the seventh -- using two hits and three errors. Slovick and Cleaver delivered their second RBI hits of the day -- both singles -- with Slovick driving in DeWitt and Long while Cleaver plated Slovick.

ONU plated single runs in each of the final three innings, but relievers Anthony Hajdu and Joey Wenning avoided allowing the big hits. Wenning picked up his fourth save of the year.

GAME TWO: BERG 10-10-1 ONU 3-5-6

ONU got off to a quick start in the second game, scoring twice off starter Trevor Adkins.

The Student Princes tied the contest in the third on a two-run single by Slovick.

In the sixth inning, Slovick walked and moved to second on a Fronk single. Two errors on a ball hit by Cleaver allowed both runners to score. Joe Walton doubled to left, plating Cleaver. Walton scored when Joey Rydzewski reached on an error.

Kyle Jenkins hit an RBI pinch-hit double, driving in Long to give HU a 7-2 lead.

Adkins (1-0) settled down after the first. He cruised into the seventh, when the Polar Bears were able to score another run. In total, he went seven innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out five while picking up his first win for the Tricolor. Marc Ochoa worked two innings of hitless relief, fanning two.

Matt Psychas capped the day with a three-run homer to left -- his second long ball of the week.

UP NEXT: While the weather forecast doesn't look promising, Heidelberg is slated to host Albion on Tuesday and travel to Adrian on Wednesday for non-conference single games.
