BSB: Berg sweeps Manchester

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University baseball team walked off with a weekend sweep of Manchester University, following up Saturday's 10-2 win with two wins on Sunday -- 15-6 and 3-2 (10). In the white-knuckle nightcap, The Berg tied the game in the eighth before winning on an error in the 10th.

Heidelberg and Manchester each began the weekend 6-3 … but after the sweep, the Student Princes move to 9-3 while the Spartans fall back to .500.

Evan Long had five hits on Sunday and nine for the weekend. On Sunday, he drove in three. Darrin Shirk, Matt Psychas, Justin DeWitt and Joey Rydzewski each contributed three hits on the day.

Strong starts by Anthony Hajdu and Trevor Adkins paced The Berg while Marc Ochoa and Joey Wenning threw scoreless relief.

Manchester committed 10 errors on Sunday, 13 in the series.

GAME ONE: BERG 15 MANCH 6

Consecutive two-out doubles in the top of the first game Manchester an early 1-0 lead.

Heidelberg took the lead in the second witn four unearned runs off Spartans starter Brandon Eck. Parker Fronk reached on a muffed throw by Eck covering first on a grounder to the right side. Fronk moved to second on a balk and to third on a bunt single by Matt Psychas. Kyle Slovick drove in Fronk with a fielder's choice to second. Later in the inning, Slovick scored on a double into the left field corner by Darrin Shirk. Joe Walton doubled home Shirk with a double off the wall in right, then scored on a single up the middle by Joey Rydzewski.

The Student Princes tacked on four more unearned runs in the fourth. Zach Cleaver singled and moved to third when Rydzewski reached on a throwing error by the shortstop. What would have been the third out of the inning allowed the floodgates to open. Justin DeWitt hit a two-run single to center, then scored on an Evan Long triple. Long scored on a Parker Fronk bloop RBI single.

In the bottom of the seventh, The Berg scored twice more, taking a 10-1 led.

HU starter Anthony Hajdu (2-1) worked a full seven innings, allowing the one run on six hits.Hajdu fanned four.

The Spartans crept back into the game with five runs in the eighth off of relievers Tristan Phillips and Conner Pacella.

The Student Princes were able to snuff out any Manchester momentum with a five-run eighth. Chaz Bova delivered a two-run single. Bova and Rydzewski scored on a double by Long.

Marc Ochoa worked a scoreless ninth to end the game.

GAME TWO: BERG 3 MANCH 2 (10 innings)

Game two starters Trevor Adkins and Taylor Kopplin were both sharp early, with five and seven strikeouts through the first four innings, respectively. For Heidelberg, Adkins went a strong seven innings -- issuing four hits and striking out seven.

Scoreless through six, Heidelberg broke through in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Keaton Mark picked up his first collegiate hit to lead off, then moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. He scored on a safety squeeze base hit by Rydzewski.

The Spartans answered in the top of the eighth. Quinton Rumsey hit a two-run home run off of reliever Eric Hooper.

Undaunted, The Berg rallied in the bottom of the eighth. Psychas was plunked to start the frame and would eventually score on a two-out double by Darrin Shirk. Shirk's hit chased Kopplin from the game. He went 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on six hits, striking out 10.

In the 10th, Heidelberg got busy with two outs. Shirk wore a Garrett Phelps 2-2 pitch and moved to third on a single by Joe Walton. After an intentional walk to Rydzewski, Justin DeWitt set a grounder to short that was mishandled. The error sparked a celebration for the Student Princes.

Joey Wenning (1-0) picked up his first collegiate win. He relieved Hooper in the eighth and went the distance. He threw 2.2 innings of hitless relief.
