Student-athletes showcase research

TIFFIN -- Student-athletes representing 17 Heidelberg University athletic teams were among the participants in the annual Minds at Work Student Research Conference on Wednesday. More than 60 current and former student-athletes presented research and posters, covering a range of topics, including health sciences, business, and political science.

"The Student Research Conference is a phenomenal way to see students' interests and what they've learned," said head football coach Scott Donaldson.

Junior offensive lineman Tyler Hunter, a CoSIDA Academic All-District selection, was one of the handful of football players to present. His presentation, "Understanding Meniere's Disease" was mentored by Dr. Trevor Bates.

"It is a great way for us coaches to see what student-athletes are doing in their academic endeavors," said Donaldson.

Two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American Karlie DiRuzza was one of many Heidelberg volleyball players to present in the event. Her poster presentation, 'How Well Do You Know Your Healthcare Provider?" was mentored by Professor Ryan Musgrave.

"We work hard in practice so we can showcase our talents in games," said head volleyball coach Jason Miller. "The Student Research Conference gives students an avenue to showcase the hard work they put in throughout the year so they can showcase their talents academically in this event."

DiRuzza had many teammates also present in the Student Research Conference.

"Our girls work extraordinarily hard in the classroom," said Miller. "I look forward to supporting them in a different venue and I hope they impress just like they do on the court."

To allow classmates, teammates, coaches, and professors to attend the presentations, classes were halted and practices were rearranged for the day.
