SB settles for a split in Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Heidelberg University Softball team settled for a disappointing split at Capital University on Saturday. The Student Princes outlasted the Comets in an 11-inning opener, 5-4, then stumbled late in a 4-3 loss in the nightcap. Heidelberg moved to 18-9 overall, 4-4 in conference play.

Freshman Alexis Burton homered in both halves of the twinbill, upping her season total to seven.

GAME ONE:  BERG 5-12-5   CAP 4-9-2

Cara Meyer got HU on the board in the top of the first, blasting a two-run homer over the wall in center.

Capital tied the game with a pair in the fourth.

Still tied in the seventh, Ellie Tressler gave the Student Princes the lead with a home run -- the 13th of her career, which puts her in the top 10 for career longballs in program history. A throwing error in the bottom of the inning allowed Cap to force extra innings.

Adyson Bowe singled home Meyer in the ninth, but a one-out solo home run once again tied the game in the bottom of the ninth.

In the 11th, Burton led off with a home run.  In the bottom of the inning, Capital had the tying run on third with two outs. Bowe ranged up the middle on a soft liner, fielded it on a hop and fired to first. The throw was up the line, and originally, it was ruled that Taylor Forrest was pulled off the bag. After conversing, the umpires reversed the call, with the plate umpire seeing a swipe tag before the runner touched first.

Haley Gockstetter (W, 11-2) earned the win, throwing 10.2 of the 11 innings. She fanned nine.

GAME TWO: CAP 4-10-2   BERG 3-8-2

An RBI single by Tressler in the first allowed HU to play from in front in the nightcap.

HU remained on top, 1-0, until Burton blasted her second of the day -- a solo shot in the sixth.

In the bottom of the inning, an error proved costly as Cap scored two unearned runs to tie the game.

Undeterred, the Student Princes found the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh when Abbie Marshall doubled to deep right center, driving in pinch-runner Ashlynne McAdow

Capital tied the game with two bunts in the seventh. A two-out single up the middle drove in the winning run.

Despite the loss, Forrest (L, 6-6) pitched well. Only two of the four CAP runs were earned.
