TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University Softball team gave up a late lead and fell to visiting Manchester University, 11-9. Originally scheduled for a doubleheader, the day was limited to a full game and two innings of the second contest because of storms. Heidelberg slipped to 14-7 overall.
Manchester struck for two in the first, but Heidelberg halved the deficit in the bottom of the inning.
Hannah Hashman walked and moved to third on a double by
Cara Meyer. Hashman scored on a sacrifice fly by
Ellie Tressler.
In the second,
Taylor Forrest,
Megan Miller,
Leah Arnett and Hashman all singled with two outs, scoring three runs.
The Spartans scored once in the third and twice in the fifth, taking a 5-4 lead.
Heidelberg wasted no time to respond. Hashman singled and scored on a double to the gap in right center by Meyer. Tressler lifted another sacrifice fly that plated Meyer. With the bases empty,
Abbie Marshall and
Adyson Bowe hit back-to-back doubles to score another. Bowe later scored on a passed ball. HU led, 8-5.
The wheels fell off for the Student Princes in the top of the seventh. Five hits and three walks allowed the visitors to score six runs.
Down 11-8, Heidelberg did score one more run on an RBI single by
Alexis Burton. The Spartans, however, did emerge with the win.
Game two was scoreless in the third when a line of storms halted play. There is no plan to make up the game.
Heidelberg will not play Alma on Wednesday because of rain. That doubleheader has been moved to April 20. The status of Friday's doubleheader with Marietta is still up in the air.
