Softball splits twinbill at Adrian

ADRIAN, Mich. -- Back in Michigan for the second time this week, the Heidelberg University Softball team split a doubleheader at Adrian College. Heidelberg won the opener, 8-6, then fell in the nightcap, 15-7.

Nearly halfway through the regular season, the Student Princes are 13-5 overall.

GAME ONE: BERG 8-11-0  ADRIAN 6-7-5

Down 1-0, HU got to work in the second. Abbie Marshall walked and darted to third on a double by Adyson Bowe.  With two outs, Megan Miller reached on an error which allowed Marshall and Bowe to score.

The Berg padded their lead with two in the fourth. Reigning OAC Hitter of the WeekAlexis Burton had an RBI single in the inning.

Marshall drove in Cara Meyer with a single in the top of the fifth, a run that was sandwiched between solo homers by Adrian.

Leah Arnett led off the sixth with a double and scored on a single by Meyer. HU led, 6-4.

Heidelberg scored two critical insurance runs in the seventh, including a run by Morgan Franklin on a Hannah Hashman base hit.

The Student Princes held on for the win in the bottom of the inning. Adrian scored twice and had the tying run at the plate, but Haley Gockstetter (W, 8-1) was able to shut the door.

GAME TWO: ADRIAN 15-15-2   BERG 7-14-2

The Bulldogs scored in bunches in the second game, plating four in the first and second innings, then pushing seven across in the fourth.

Miller had an RBI single in the second, but a majority of HU's offense came in the third.

Meyer singled and scored on a double by Ellie Tressler. Marshall added another RBI hit, singling to left center. Bowe followed with a two-run homer to center.  The fifth run of the inning was driven in by Arnett.  Heidelberg trailed, 8-6.

After yielding the seven runs in the fourth, HU was unable to stave off the mercy rule in the fifth. The visitors did manage to scratch one run across on an error, but stranded three.
