TIFFIN – A seven-goal third quarter helped lift the Heidelberg University Men's Lacrosse team to their first win of the season against Alma, 13-4. The Student Princes moved to 1-1, and Alma fell to 0-2.
Kaivin Jones,
Malachai Davis and
Will Romell -- all freshmen -- tallied hat tricks in the victory.
Down 1-0 midway through the first, Romell tallied his first collegiate goal. Taking a cross-field pass from
Colin Parker, Romell rifled the ball into the net from the right wing. Just before the horn sounded to end the first,
Rayce Septer put HU on top with a goal assisted by
Sonny Varrati. HU had taken possession with 20 seconds left, and Varrati found Septer running down the middle of the field. The senior tallied the goal with 3.3 left.
Alma scored the only goal of the second, knotting the game at two.
Septer put HU ahead with a man-up goal early in the third, assisted by Jones. Jones and
Mario Manzardo scored unassisted tallies 74 seconds apart as The Berg opened a 5-2 lead.
Later in the third, Parker found Davis for a goal at the 6:37 mark -- touching off a goal-frenzy to close out the frame. A goal from Jones and two from Rommel followed, and the Tricolor led 9-2 after three.
Davis scored twice in the fourth, while
Mark Scherger and Jones scored once.
Parker had three assists on the night.
Defensively, freshman
MJ Yarosh caused a team-best three turnovers. Yarosh, Varrati and
Brandon Musa scooped up five ground balls apiece.
In goal,
Wilson Runnette allowed three goals in 55+ minutes -- stopping 13 shots.
Sean McGee finished up, making one save in his debut.
Heidelberg returns to action at Trine on Sunday. The opening faceoff in Angola is scheduled for 1 p.m.
