GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Heidelberg University Volleyball team dropped three matches at the Calvin Invitational. HU lost five-setters to Cornell (Iowa) and North Park before getting swept by Calvin.
On Friday, Heidelberg handled business for the first two sets before their fortunes soured. After dominating the third set, Cornell survived the fourth set, 26-24. In the fifth, Cornell routed HU to complete the reverse sweep, 15-5.
Heidelberg's middles,
Kaitlyn Uffman and
Sophia Simon continued their strong play. Uffman had 16 kills and Simon had 15 kills without an error.
Saturday saw the Student Princes fall behind North Park, 1-0, before roaring back. After handling the Vikings in the second and third sets, Heidelberg seemed out of sync in the fourth. In the fifth, HU had a modest lead early, but switched sides down 8-6. Still out of rhythm, HU fell, 15-11.
Host Calvin, a perennial Midwest power, gave little hope to the Student Princes, who sit 9-7 on the season.
For the weekend,
Sophia Simon had 29 kills and hit .284. She added 12 blocks and two aces for 38 total points. Uffman had 27 kills and 10 blocks.
Heidelberg is slated to host the Spike Night Under the Lights game on Monday, weather permitting. The Student Princes will host Findlay outside at Hoernemann Stadium, with game time scheduled for 8 p.m., following Calvert and Columbian High School's JV and Varsity teams. The rain date is slated for Wednesday. All weather-related changes will be posted on BergAthletics.com as soon as they become available.
