Box Score 2 TIFFIN -- In a result that should surprise no one, the Heidelberg University Softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday, beating conference foe Mount Union in the opener, 11-3, then stumbling in the nightcap, 13-1. Heidelberg, splitters of their last nine play dates, moved to 11-9 overall, 1-1 in the OAC.
After working out of a major jam in the first, only allowing one run to score, starter
Taylor Forrest watched as her teammates plated four in the bottom of the first.
Abbie Marshall was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, tying the game at 1.
Emma Dean followed with a single to left center that drove in a pair.
Aubrey Conklin concluded the scoring with an RBI groundout.
The Purple Raiders answered with one in the top of the third, but Conklin responded with a three-run homer to left field. The bomb gave HU a 7-2 lead.
Rather than resting with a big lead, The Berg piled on. They scored twice in the fifth, using a Marshall sac fly and RBI single by
Jade Torres. In the sixth, the Student Princes secured the mercy rule with a solo home run by
Gabbie Stallbaum and a game-ending base hit from Dean that drove in pinch runner
Karissa Smith.
Forrest went the distance for the win, allowing three runs on seven hits.
The nightcap was dominated by the Purple Raiders, with the lone run coming via a homer by Marshall.
Heidelberg is scheduled to travel to Capital on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. doubleheader. Weather-related changes will be posted at BergAthletics.com.
