TIFFIN, Ohio -- In a back-and-forth affair, the Heidelberg University Men's Soccer team walked away with a 2-2 draw against visiting Defiance College on Saturday.
Moments after Defiance nearly got on the board -- hitting the post from a header inside the six,
Hussein Faraj broke a scoreless tie in the 6th minute. A Yellowjacket turnover in their defensive third landed on the foot of Faraj. Dribbling through the center, Faraj right-footed the ball into the side netting from 20 yards out.
Defiance had a golden opportunity to tie the game minutes later, with a Defiance player in alone down the left wing. Goalkeeper
Ryan Miller challenged and deflected enough of the shot to allow
Cody Springer to clear it off the line.
The visitors found their equalizer in the 27th minute on a counterattack. Tyler Fritchley slotted the ball past Miller.
Heidelberg responded in the 31st minute with a goal that started with a run down the right wing and a ball crossed into the penalty area by
Kaiden Reed. It deflected to a wide-open
Zane Paul, who buried the ball in the net. The goal gave HU a 2-1 lead, which it carried into halftime.
The Yellowjackets tied the game once again in the 54th minute.
Defiance had three great looks at a go-ahead goal, including a scramble in the penalty area in the final minute of the contest. The match, which featured four yellow cards and a red card, ended in a 2-2 draw.
In his collegiate debut, Miller had five saves in the tie.
Heidelberg returns to action on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. kick against Wooster at home.
