Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer kicks off season with draw against #15 Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Saturday afternoon, the Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team faced a tough challenge, traveling north to take on No. 15 Calvin University in their season opener. The match, held on a warm August afternoon, ended in a 0-0 draw, thanks to a standout defensive performance from Heidelberg, particularly junior goalkeeper Brigid Enright.

In a first half dominated by Calvin, the Knights took eight shots (four on goal) compared to Heidelberg's two. However, Heidelberg's defense, led by Enright, kept the game scoreless. Enright recorded four crucial saves in the first half, halting Calvin's attempts to break the tie. Despite Calvin earning five corner kicks, the defensive unit of The Berg remained stout. A chance for Heidelberg came in the 27th minute when Syd Hewer's shot just missed, sailing over the top right corner of the goal.

Calvin's offensive pressure continued into the second half with nine shots on goal, but Enright's exceptional performance kept the Knights off the scoreboard. Enright's final tally of 12 saves was a career high, passing her previous best of 11 saves against Kenyon last fall.

Offensively, Heidelberg saw shots from four different players, though none were able to find the back of the net.

Bolstered by the draw against a national-ranked opponent, the Heidelberg Women's Soccer team returns home for a pair of matches next week. They will host Albion on Wednesday, Sept. 4th at 4 p.m. and welcome Bethany on Saturday, Sept. 7th at 1 p.m. to Hidden Valley Soccer Complex.
