Heartbreak in Westerville!

Late goal lifts Otterbein past upstart Student Princes

WESTERVILLE -- Syd Hewer scored twice in the second half, but a late goal by host Otterbein University lifted the Cardinals over the Heidelberg University Women's Soccer team in the quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. Otterbein advances to face Ohio Northern in the semifinals on Thursday.

Otterbein led 2-0 with less than 20 minutes to play and prospects for Heidelberg, which had mustered only one shot to that point, appeared grave. A handball on Otterbein just outside of their penalty area gave the Student Princes a golden opportunity in the 74th minute.

Hewer stepped up, as she had on several occasions throughout the season, and rocketed a right-footed shot to the left of the wall. The ball grazed the underside of the crossbar and sailed into the goal, breathing hope into the Student Princes.

In the 81st minute, The Berg found an equalizer. A poorly-handled trap on a bouncing ball in their defensive third landed at the feet of Brianna Braatz. Momentarily cutting wide to the right, she played a pass into space for Hewer in the center of the field. Taking one touch, Hewer launched a shot from nearly 30 yards out that, once again, flew over the outstretched hands of the Cardinals goalkeeper.

The game remained tied at 2 into the final two minutes of the game. Off a corner kick, Otterbein's Kesley Louderback headed a shot into the net -- dashing the hopes of the Heidelberg faithful.

Brigid Enright made four stops in the game and finished the year with 114 saves and a goals against average of 0.65.

Heidelberg, selected to finish ninth in the OAC preseason poll, finished the season with a 10-4-5 record. Braatz and Hewer tied for the team lead in goals and assists, both finishing with nine and six.
