SB tripped up on Alumni Day

TIFFIN -- On Alumni Day, the Heidelberg University softball team dropped both halves of a doubleheader against visiting Mount Union.  The Purple Raiders won the opener in five innings, 11-0, then fell in the nightcap, 5-2.

Heidelberg slipped to 10-13 and 0-2 in OAC action.  Mount Union improved to 15-3, 2-0.

The Student Princes had 12 hits on the day, with Emma Dean collecting four of them.

GAME ONE: MTU 11-15-0   BERG 0-4-0

After being retired in order in the first, the Purple Raiders scored four times in the second inning.  They tallied single runs in the third and fourth before putting the game out of reach with a five-run fifth.

Heidelberg struggled to solve Mount Union starter Kendyll Cahill, who fanned four in the complete game.

GAME TWO:  MTU 5-9-1   BERG 2-8-4

Heidelberg took the lead with a run in the second.  The usually-reserved Gabbie Stallbaum ignited the 'Berg dugout with a yell after drilling the top of the center field fence with a double.  She scored on a double to right center by Murissa Drown.

The Student Princes added an unearned run in the third.  Jade Torres reached on a dropped fly ball and moved to second when Meghan Bame drew her team-leading sixth hit-by-pitch.  Emma Dean ripped a 3-2 pitch into center field, driving in Torres.

Mount Union scratched unearned runs across in the top of the fifth and the sixth, tying the game.

Heidelberg nearly took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but a sliding grab by Grace Heath robbed Stallbaum of an RBI-single.

The Purple Raiders scored three times in the seventh, taking a 5-2 lead.

Heidelberg threatened in the bottom of the inning but came up empty.

The rarely-reserved Jessica Voitko (6-6) got the start for HU in game two and stymied the visitors for much of the game. She went the distance and struck out five.

UP NEXT:

Heidelberg and Capital have moved their doubleheader, originally scheduled for Tuesday, ahead a day because of the weather forecast.  The twinbill is slated for a 3 p.m. start in Columbus.
