ADRIAN, Michigan -- The Heidelberg University Wrestling Team kicked off the 2023-24 campaign with a third-place finish at the Adrian Invitational. Carson Pottenger Mendoza and Adam Medeiros used their wealth of experience to win their weight classes.  Travis Richardson, Owen Frizzell and Demitrius Hernandez both had three wins on the opening day of competition.

"I'm very proud of Adam and Carson for leading the way," said Head Coach Tony Patrizi. "It was exciting to see some newcomers go out and get wins in their first tournament."

Pottenger Mendoza began his campaign at 165 with a 15-0 tech fall win over Ethan Cooper (Wabash).  He followed that with a 6-5 victory over Tyler Bodovetz (OWU), then beat Mitchell Arch (Case), 10-7 in the finals.

At 184, Medeiros powered past Sammy Saunders (Wabash) with an 18-2 tech fall.  In the semifinals, he pinned Desmon Perry (OWU) early in the second.  He needed 89 seconds to pin Sean Malenfant (Alfred St.) in the finals.

Richardson, wrestling at 157, was 3-1 with a major decision. At 174, Frizzell had two pins and a major decision, going 3-1.  Hernandez, also 3-1, picked up a pin at 285.  All three finished third.

Brenden Yob (125), David Gelman (133), and Carter Mock (157) each picked up two wins.

"We are looking forward to the opportunity to get back this week to train," said Patrizi.

Heidelberg returns to action at the Trine Invitational next Saturday.
