Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

VB goes 2-1 at Great Lakes Cross Over

SANDUSKY, Ohio --  Serving as event host, the Heidelberg University volleyball team went 2-1 at the inaugural Great Lakes Cross Over tournament at the Cedar Point Sports Center.  Heidelberg swept its matches on Friday, beating Western Connecticut and Smith, then fell to perennial power Hope on Saturday morning.

In all, the Great Lakes Cross Over featured 23 teams and 44 games over the two-day event -- which is believed to be the biggest in Division III.

Five 'Berg players amassed 10+ kills over the weekend, led by Liana Petitti's 21.  Sadie Estle had 19, Lexi Wachtman and Lexi Evak added 17, and Grace Porter registered 14. Evak had a team-high .310 attack percentage.

Setting the offense, the tandem of Kelsey Custenborder and Julianna Pena combined for 73 assists in the 11 sets of action.

Defensively, Nicole Thomas donned the libero jersey for the opening three matches and performed admirably. Thomas picked up 58 digs and received 34 serves.  Petitti added 41 digs while Pena and freshman Grace Dohanyos both added 20.

At the net, Estle had a team-high 18 total blocks.  Evak added 13.

In the opening match of their season, HU put down Western Connecticut State in straight sets, 25-15, 25-18, 25-23.

The Berg followed up the opener with another sweep, knocking off Smith in three (25-22, 25-19, 25-19).

Heidelberg went toe-to-toe with Hope, taking the Flying Dutch to five sets.  Hope won the odd sets, but the Tricolor took the even sets.  In the end, Hope took control of the deciding set and won 25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 23-25, 15-7.

The Student Princes return to action on Tuesday when they host Adrian College at 7 p.m.
