TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University men's soccer team opened the 2022 campaign with a 1-1 tie against visiting Defiance College. The Berg conceded a goal late in the first half, but found the equalizer midway through the second.
In a game played largely in the middle third of the field, Defiance had the better of play in the opening frame. Thanks in large part to 'Berg goalkeeper
Sigurd Ilestad, Heidelberg remained even until the closing seconds of the first. Jeremy Jiminez put the Yellow Jackets ahead 1-0, hammering a loose ball in the penalty area past Ilestad.
In the 64th minute,
Josh Daum played a terrific long ball into space down the left side.
Kelly Itito ran onto it and took a touch before beating Defiance goalkeeper Orry Killham to the near side.
Both teams had good looks at go-ahead goals, but Ilestad and Killham were equal to the task.
Teams tested out the new NCAA rule which eliminated overtime in regular season contests.
Defiance outshot Heidelberg, 13-6.
Ethan White and
Simon Joseph each had two shots.
Ilestad finished with five saves.
Heidelberg returns to action on Saturday at Adrian. Kickoff with the Bulldogs is scheduled for 7 p.m.
