CLERMONT, Fla. -- For the second day in a row, the Heidelberg University softball team only got one of their two games in. Unlike Sunday, when an umpire shortage cost HU a game, a torrential downpour forced the cancellation of their nightcap. And, unlike Sunday's loss to Wittenberg, the Student Princes picked up a resounding win over Emmanuel College, 13-0.
After a scoreless first inning, Heidelberg (1-0) broke out for three runs in the top of the second inning.
Murissa Drown and
Riley Cruse led off with singles just over the heads of the infielders.
Maddie Gossard laid down a sacrifice bunt, but reached on a throwing error by the Emmanuel pitcher. On the play, pinch runner
Brooke Johnson scored. With the bases loaded,
Kalli Sowers doubled to left, plating two.
Gabbie Stallbaum led off the fourth with a single through the left side, then moved to third on another double by Sowers.
Kirsten Kracht delivered a pinch-hit RBI single that drove in Stallbaum.
Hanna Blasinsky blooped a single to left that plated Sowers.
Emma Dean drove in
Kat Brady with a single up the middle, but Blasinsky was thrown out at the plate. Drown followed with a double to center that drove in Dean. In all, it was a four-run inning for Heidelberg, which led 7-0.
Head Coach
Mari Briggs was able to work in a multitude of subs in the six-run fifth inning. HU loaded the bases on hits from Stallbaum and pinch-hitter
Halie Monhollen and a Sowers hit-by-pitch. Brady drove in a run with a single to short before pinch-hitter
Raye Hammond lifted a sacrifice fly to left. Dean drove in another with a single down the left field line. Tik Tok sensation
Meghan Bame hit the top of the wall in left with a two-run double.
Jessica Voitko followed with a double to left center, driving in Bame with the final run of the frame.
While the offense was exploding, starter
Caitlin Dems dazzled. Dems (1-1) threw a three-hit shutout. She struck out six and walked two.
Emmanuel, an NCAA Regional qualifier last year, dropped to 0-2.
Heidelberg cranked out 17 hits, their most since April 2, 2019 against Capital.
Weather and umpires permitting, Heidelberg will battle Rivier at 10 a.m. and Ohio Wesleyan at 12:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
