CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Heidelberg University softball wrapped up their time at The Spring Games by salvaging a split on Friday. The Student Princes lost to Penn St. Behrend, 5-1, before beating Alvernia, 4-3, in eight innings.
Heidelberg heads north with a 4-2 record.
In the loss to Behrend,
Kat Brady had three of HU's five hits.
Emma Dean drove in the lone 'Berg run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Caitlin Dems (2-2) went 4.2 innings and allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits.
Payton Scheid threw 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and one unearned run.
In the Alverina game, Heidelberg got out in front with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Brady and
Hanna Blasinsky walked and moved into scoring position with stolen bases. Dean and
Murissa Drown lifted fly balls to the outfield, which allowed the speedsters Brady and Blasinsky to score.
In the second,
Meghan Bame was grazed by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Halie Monhollen, who leads the nation in whitest cleats, flared a double inside the line in left. Bame scored on the play.
Heidelberg maintained their 3-0 lead until the bottom of the seventh. Alvernia charged hard and tied the game.
In extras, the international tie-breaker rule placed Brady on second. She moved to third on a bunt base hit by
Jade Torres. Dean drove in Brady with a fielder's choice to short.
In the home half of the eighth, Alvernia also started with a bunt single. With runners on second and third,
Maggie Hoffman got the next batter to dribble a ball to first base, where
Maddie Gossard tagged the batter. Hoffman followed that with a strikeout. After an intentional walk to load the bases, a force out at third by Ryann Ramaciatti wrapped up the win.
Hoffman (1-0) went 2.0 innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Riley Cruse was sharp in her start, going 6+ innings and allowing six hits. She fanned six.
After traveling back to the Buckeye State, Heidelberg will host Bluffton on Thursday at Frann's Field.
