MBB drops home opener

TIFFIN -- It was a tough Friday night for the Heidelberg University men's basketball team, as they dropped their home opener and first game of the inaugural Ron Linhart Memorial Classic to Wisconsin Whitewater, 78-67.

The Student Princes struggled offensively all game, shooting only 35%  from the field and 28.6% from 3-point land. On the other hand, however, UW-Whitewater lit up the scoreboard and showed consistent motion on offense.  The Warhawks were led by brothers Miles and Delvin Barnstable, who poured in 21 and 20 points and grabbed six and 10 rebounds respectively. Trevon Chisolm also played a key role for the Warhawks offense putting up 14 points.

The tempo was a lot slower for a typical Student Prince game and this could be attributed to foul trouble throughout the contest as Zane Leitwein and Seth Hohman each ended with four fouls, limiting their overall impact.

While the offense was largely stagnant, The Berg was led by sophomore Isaiah Young.  The Akron native picked up right where he left off from his award-winning freshman season, with 16 points on an efficient 54.5% from the field. Emmanuel Perdue and DJ Ferguson each contributed to Heidelberg's offense as well, netting 10 points.

Trailing 41-27 at the half, The Berg showed a bit of life midway through the second half through an Eric Panning dunk with 14:44 to go.  The Warhawks responded with a dunk of their own by Delvin Barnstable just three minutes later to balloon the lead up to 22 for the Warhawks.

Late in the contest, the Student Princes continued to fight as the lead got as low as nine after a Seth Hohman 3-pointer, with 22 seconds left. Miles Barnstable iced the game with free throws to put the game out of reach. The match puts the Student Princes at 0-1 on the season and propels the Warhawks to a 2-0 record thus far.

The Student Princes are back in action for the second day of the Ron Linhart Memorial Classic, as they take on the Olivet Comets at 4 PM.
