TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University softball team dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader at home. Mount Union flexed its offensive muscle, winning 16-4 and 14-4. The Student Princes have dropped six straight.
Heidelberg (2-8-1, 1-7 OAC) had six players record two hits apiece. Mount Union (11-1, 8-0 OAC) cranked out 10 extra-base hits on the day.
GAME ONE: MTU 16 BERG 4 (6 innings)
After spotting Mount Union three runs in the first, Heidelberg answered with two in the home half of the inning. A
Shelby Miller walk sandwiched between singles by
Kat Brady and
Brooke Lewis loaded the bases. HU plated runs on a sacrifice fly by
Leah Bouillon and a single by
Raye Hammond.
Heidelberg took the lead in the bottom of the second with a pair of unearned runs.
Maggie Hoffman walked and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. After Miller walked again, Lewis sent a lazy fly ball to left that was dropped. The error allowed Hoffman to score easily.
Emma Dean gave HU the lead with a single through the right side.
Down 4-3 in the fourth, Mount Union used four extra-base hits with two outs to plate four runs -- taking a 7-4 lead.
Mount Union scored one in the fifth then put up eight in the sixth. Heidelberg loaded the bases in the sixth, but was unable to stave off the run-rule.
GAME TWO: MTU 14 BERG 4 (5 innings)
It was more of the same from the patient and potent Mount Union offense in the nightcap. The Purple Raiders scored five in both the first and the second -- taking a commanding lead.
The pesky Student Princes fought back. In the second, Bouillon was hit by a pitch and Hammond walked. With two outs,
Kayla McCoy blooped a single to center, scoring Bouillon. After a throwing error brought in a run and extended the inning, Miller sent a two-run single up the middle.
Mount would get one back in the third, then added one in the fourth and two in the fifth.
UP NEXT:
Heidelberg will look to regroup next weekend with a four-game set against Baldwin Wallace. Saturday's doubleheader is in Berea, while Sunday's games are at Frann's Field in Tiffin.
