Women's Soccer punches tourney ticket

TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University women's soccer team needed a win on Senior Day at Hoernemann Stadium to punch their ticket to the OAC Tournament for the first time in more than a decade.  Thanks to goals by captains Ainsley Tucker and Audrey Kaufman, the Student Princes emerged with a 2-1 win over the Muskingum Fighting Muskies.

Heidelberg improved to 11-6 overall, and 4-5 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.  The Muskies fell to 2-17, and 0-9 in the Ohio Athletic Conference.

Six seniors for The Berg were recognized prior to the game: Sophia Jackson, Sydney Shafer, Alessandra Piazza, Bekah Thomas, Lexi Foley, and Courtney Moggio.

The Students Princes struck first with a penalty kick goal from Tucker in the 44th minute. The penalty kick was a result of a handball within the penalty box. Tucker rocketed the ball to the right of the diving Muskingum goalie giving HU the first goal of the game.

The Fighting Muskies responded early in the 2nd half with a strong blast from Muskingum forward Birkely Richards in the 52nd minute.

Heidelberg struck once again with a goal in the 70th minute. Tucker played a ball into space from the midfield ahead.  After a well-timed run, Kaufman took one touch before depositing the ball inside the right post. Kaufman's goal was her 13th on the season, the most by a Student Prince since Molly Thornton had 14 in 2000.

The Heidelberg offense was relentless in their attack finishing the game 29 shots, 19 on goal. Kaufman led the way with 6 shots.

Defensively, the Student Princes were stout allowing only six shots total. HU goalie Meredith Bruce finished the day with five saves, giving her 123 on the season. Bruce finishes the regular season in 2nd place in the OAC in saves.

Heidelberg, advancing to postseason play for the first time since 2010, will enter the OAC Tournament as the sixth seed. The Student Princes appear to be headed to Capital, but the official OAC release should be distributed late Saturday.  The game will be played Tuesday at 7 p.m.
