TIFFIN -- The Heidelberg University volleyball team struggled to find a rhythm in a home loss to Baldwin Wallace University on Wednesday. The Yellow Jackets, led by an 18-kill effort from Ivy Earl, dispatched of the Student Princes in three -- 25-23, 25-19, 25-21. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for The Berg.
Heidelberg stumbled to 14-6 overall, 3-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. BW improved to 16-7, 2-2.
Anamya Truex hit .423 and tallied 11 kills to lead Heidelberg.
Maddie Szawranskyj added 10 kills and 10 digs.
Defensively,
Sarah Oney had 21 digs. As a team, Heidelberg had six blocks.
In the first set, Heidelberg attacked at a game-high .423 clip, but seemed to trail the entire way. A steady diet of BW attacks from Earl, Cecelia Hamisch and Allison Weiner kept the Student Princes at bay.
Heidelberg did themselves in throughout the second set, committing eight errors and hitting a paltry .047. The bright spot during the middle set was the return of
Lexi Evak, back from an injury. Evak delighted the crowd and the 'Berg bench with a kill that gave HU a 14-13 lead. BW took seven of the next eight points to usurp control of the set.
The Yellow Jackets led 18-13 in the third before Heidelberg crept back in. HU got within two on multiple occasions, but could not maintain the momentum.
The Student Princes return to action on Saturday with a tri-match hosted by Otterbein University. Heidelberg faces the Cardinals (17-2, 4-0) at noon, then battles Mount St. Joseph (12-7) in a non-conference tussle at 2 p.m.
