TIFFIN -- Against the No. 18 Otterbein University Cardinals, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team narrowly fell by a final score of 1-0 on Saturday afternoon of Homecoming Weekend for the Student Princes.
With the loss, Heidelberg moves to 5-8-1 overall and 1-4 in conference play. The Cardinals improved to 12-1-1, 5-0.
The Student Princes held the ranked Cardinals to a meek six shots in the first half, with only one testing
Meredith Bruce in the Heidelberg goal. On the flipside, Heidelberg did not register a shot on the attacking end in the first half.
The second half went much of the same, except Heidelberg ramped up the offensive pressure, matching the Cardinals' six second-45 shot attempts. Much like the first half, Otterbein was limited to just one shot on goal, but managed to beat Bruce this time around.
In the 51st minute, Otterbein's leading scorer Bella Shivley netted a freekick from about 35 yards out to the upper left corner for the only goal of the game.
Outside of the freekick goal, much credit should go to Berg defenders
Lexi Foley and
Madison Zimmerman for keeping Shivley quiet for most of the match.
Of the six shots for Heidelberg, four of them came in the final 10 minutes of play as they pushed for an equalizer.
Audrey Kaufman,
Victoria Perez,
Sophie Huber, and
Sophia Jackson all registered shots late on, but could not test Otterbein goalkeeper Erin Gordon who did not have a save on the day.
Up next for the Student Princes, Heidelberg will travel to Ohio Northern for a Tuesday night match. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. in Ada.
