MARIETTA -- The Heidelberg University women's soccer team came out on the wrong end of a five-goal thriller away to Marietta College on Saturday evening. On the Ohio River, the Student Princes couldn't overcome the brisk conditions and fell to the Pioneers by a final of 3-2.
With the loss, Heidelberg slips to an overall record of 4-7-1 and a conference mark of 0-3. Marietta improves to 7-5-1, 1-2.Â
It took just 12 minutes for the Student Princes to find themselves trailing to the hosts. McKenzie Dorr -- who had started the match with the first three shots of the game -- finally connected on her second tally of the season at the 11:39 mark of the first half. Dorr dribbled through the backline and found the far right corner for the score.Â
Heidelberg responded with a vengeance. The Berg took the next seven shots of the game and in the 22nd minute, finally leveled the score at one a piece.
Erica Campbell connected on her seventh strike of the year with a shot from the left side of the box to the far right corner.
From there, the rest of the first half evened out as both sides didn't offer much going forward.Â
After the halftime intermission, Marietta once again got out the gates hot. This time, it took just five minutes for the Pioneers to score as Gracie Tate finished off a scramble in the box to restore the lead.
Sophia Jackson and goalkeeper
Meredith Bruce combined to stop an initial threat, but Tate swarmed in to place the loose ball in the empty net.Â
This time, it took the Berg a little longer to respond, but freshman
Victoria Perez got them level once again in the 65th minute with her fourth tally of her rookie year and second in as many games. Perez dispatched a well-placed shot from outside the area to the upper right corner of the leaping Karlee Bruns in net for Marietta. Campbell picked up the assist on the goal as her cross set up Perez at the top of the area.Â
Marietta answered the Berg once again restoring their lead, this time in the 78th minute. Chloe Williams received a pass from Sienna Ahlers nearly 25 yards from goal. Williams took a touch and sent a looping strike to the right side netting for the go-ahead tally.Â
Perez narrowly missed out on getting her second of the match and sending the game to OT as her free kick attempt with just over two minutes remaining went agonizingly over the crossbar.Â
In the match, Bruce stopped two shots, while Bruns had four saves for Marietta.Â
The loss marked the fifth game this season in which Campbell has tallied at least one goal and one assist in the same match.Â
Heidelberg will stay on the road as they travel to Baldwin Wallace on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. kickoff in Berea.Â
