DEFIANCE, Ohio -- For the third straight season, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team starts the season with a victory. Freshman Madison Zimmerman provided the offense, scoring twice as the Berg defeated Defiance College 2-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Heidelberg put up many shots within the first ten minutes, but could not find the back of the net. Zimmerman provided a spark off the bench in the 27th minute, putting HU on the board. The strike deflected off of the Defiance keeper and into the net for a 1-0 lead.

It didn't take long for Zimmerman to strike again, as the freshman scored her second goal three minutes later.

The Student Prince offense kept peppering DC keeper Rachel Lowell, but could not find the third goal.

Defiance got on the board with a penalty kick in the 85th minute by Kassie Memmer, sister of HU freshman Kamryn Memmer

The Yellow Jackets threatened to find the equalizer, but goalkeeper Alexandra Farmer made a crucial save in the 90th minute to preserve the win. Farmer made five saves in the victory.

Head coach Nick Spell on the win: "It was great to play our first game and come out on top ... We did some things really well today but we still have to continue to improve."

Spell on the play of Zimmerman: "She gave us a great spark off the bench and it was awesome to see her score her first collegiate goals."

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

With the win, the Student Princes improve to 7-4-1 over Defiance in the Nick Spell era.

The Tricolor kept the Defiance busy, as it outshot DC 29-8.

The Berg will have a quick turnaround, as the team will face off with Bethany College tomorrow afternoon. The match, hosted by Defiance College, is scheduled for 1 p.m.
