WSOC wins in 2OT on Senior Day

Box Score

TIFFIN -- They just wanted to play a little longer on their home field.

On Senior Day at Hidden Valley, the Heidelberg University women's soccer team needed two overtime periods to defeat Marietta College, 3-2. The victory allows the Student Princes to stay in the OAC Tournament playoff picture.

Junior Danielle Rathfon played the role of hero, scoring the golden goal in the 107th minute. Rathfon rifled a shot into the back of the net off a beautiful cross from the right side by classmate Amanda Kilway.

Both teams traded own goals within the first 15 minutes of the game. Erica Campbell recorded her team-leading 12th goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Senior Darby Moloney played a through ball to Campbell, who took a touch and buried the shot into the lower left 90. The Berg took a 2-1 lead into halftime.

Marietta found the equalizer in the 59th minute when Kayla Tomlin placed a shot perfectly in the upper 90 from 18 yards out.

HU peppered the Marietta goal in the final five minutes of regulation, but could not push the game winner across until the second overtime. The Berg outshot Marietta, 25-12.

Goalkeeper Alexandra Farmer made eight saves in the match -- three of which came in the extra minutes.

The game-winning goal was the third time this season Kilway and Rathfon connected for a score. It was Rathfon's sixth goal of the season and Kilway's sixth assist.

Head coach Nick Spell on the win: "Today was a complete team effort … We needed everybody to step up and they did that … Obviously Senior Day is an emotional day and it's tough to get in a rhythm early … I'm glad we got the win for the seniors."

At halftime, the program recognized seniors Melodie Harnett, Madelaine Kuhn, Darby Moloney, Abigail Callahan, Maureen Kelly, Kimberly Keenan, and Madison Myers. All seven seniors earned the start in the match.

Heidelberg stands at 9-7-1, 3-4 on the season. The Pioneers slip to 6-8-2, 2-5.

The Berg returns to action on Tuesday for an OAC match at Capital. Game time in Bexley is scheduled for 7 p.m.
