Softball takes two from Yellow Jackets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

TIFFIN - The Heidelberg University softball team swept a doubleheader from Defiance College on Tuesday, run-ruling the Yellow Jackets in game one before winning 7-2 in the second game. Heidelberg improved to a perfect 16-0 for regular season games at Frann's Field with the sweep.

In game two, Mikaela Mitsch hit her 27th career home run in the bottom of the first, tying Jadie Wheeler ('96-99) atop the career leaderboard.

With the pair of wins, the Student Princes improved to 14-2 on the year while Defiance fell to 10-12.

STANDOUT STATS

GAME ONE: Heidelberg 8, Defiance 0 (5 innings)

Heidelberg struck first with a six-spot in the second. Morgan Daniels doubled down the line in right and moved to third on a basehit by Taylor Hicks. After a walk to Haylee Patel, Renee Lovett slapped an RBI single to left. With one out, Marissa Smego sent a bouncer up the middle that plated a pair. Mikaela Mitsch sent a hot shot down to third that ricocheted off of the third baseman over to the shortstop. An errant throw to first allowed Lovett to score. Kayla Zachrich and Abbey McKee drew walks, which forced in another run. The scoring was capped by a sacrifice fly to right by Daniels.

Defiance threatened to score in the top of the fourth, but a runner gunned out at home by Taylor Hicks kept the Yellow Jackets off of the board.

The Student Princes tacked on one more to their lead in the bottom of the inning when Daniels scored Zachrich with a sacrifice fly to make it a seven-run lead.

After Defiance failed to score in the top of the fifth, Heidelberg completed the run-rule win when Smego singled with the bases loaded to cap off the 8-0 win.

GAME TWO: Heidelberg 7, Defiance 2

After Defiance scored an unearned run in the top of the first in game two, Heidelberg promptly took the lead in the bottom of the inning when Mitsch drilled a two-run homer to center, the 27th home run of her career.

The Student Princes extended their lead to 4-1 in the second when Kaitlin Keys and Lovett each drove in a run to make it a three-run advantage.

After two scoreless innings, Heidelberg finally got their offense going in the fifth when a two-run double by Zachrich and a run scored on a wild pitch made it a 7-1 lead for the Berg.

Defiance scored one in the sixth, but Heidelberg was able to hold them the rest of the way to cruise to the sweep and a 7-2 win.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

With a hit in both games, Mitsch now has a 10-game hitting streak and has reached base safely in every game for the Berg this season.

QUOTE FROM THE COACH

Heidelberg head coach Betsy Hada on her team's performance: "I thought we played Heidelberg softball today -- good approaches at the plate, strong pitching and solid defense."
