Late goal pushes Oberlin past Women's Soccer

Box Score

TIFFIN – The perfect record in Tiffin for the Heidelberg University women's soccer team came to an end on Sunday, as they fell to Oberlin College. After leading 1-0 at the half, the Student Princes were unable to maintain that as the Yeowomen scored a late goal to steal the victory from the Berg.

KEY STATS

Oberlin scored in the 87th minute to break the tie score and steal the win from Heidelberg.

After holding a 6-5 edge in shots at halftime, Heidelberg was out-shot 12-4 in the second period.

Danielle Rathfon scored her fourth goal of the season on the day. For the week, she played a part in each of the 5 goals for Heidelberg, recording four goals and one assist.

FIRST HALF

Heidelberg (3-4-0) came out strong offensively out of the gate, pressing up. That paid off in the fourth minute when Rathfon, fresh off a hat trick on Saturday, found space in the box and drilled the ball into the lower 90 for the goal.

The Student Princes played physically throughout the remainder of the half, and that drew a card in the 28th minute when Denise Bowes was booked with a yellow card.

The 1-0 lead held up heading into halftime as the Student Princes held a 6-5 edge in shots at the break.

SECOND HALF

Oberlin (4-2-1) showed their halftime adjustment right away in the second half, as they took possession and attacked.

Posessing the ball in Heidelberg's half of the field for the majority of the half, the Yeowomen broke through in the 67th minute when Gwennie Gardiner scored on a breakaway to even the score at one.

With the score knotted at one heading late in the match, things looked to be headed to overtime, but Oberlin took advantage of a great chance late. In the 87th minute, Heidelberg committed a foul just outside the right side of the box, allowing a dangerous free kick.

Caitlin McCuskey made a run into the middle of the box unmarked and scored off of the free kick by Hannah Cook, giving Oberlin the 2-1 lead and what turned out to be the game-winning goal.

UP NEXT

Heidelberg will be home again on Wednesday, September 23rd, when they face Mount St. Joseph. That non-conference match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. at the Hidden Valley Soccer Complex in Tiffin.
