Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DELAWARE, Ohio – With the wind blowing out to left, a pesky Ohio Wesleyan University softball team powered its way to a surprising sweep of Heidelberg University on Tuesday. The Battling Bishops won 6-4 in the opener and walked off with a 10-9 win in the nightcap.

The losses sank HU's record to 25-7 on the year. OWU improved to 13-19.

KEY STATS: Teams combined for nine home runs ... HU freshman Abbey McKee hit three of the home runs. She added a double and finished with a slugging percentage of 2.667 on the day ... Mikaela Mitsch was 5-for-7 with a home run ... OWU added at least one run in the bottom half of six of the eight innings in which Heidelberg scored.

GAME ONE -- OHIO WESLEYAN 6 HEIDELBERG 4: After two scoreless innings, Heidelberg struck for a run in the top of the third. Randi Kelsey drew a leadoff walk and moved to third with two outs. On the first pitch, Marissa Smego pulled a basehit through the left side to put the Student Princes ahead.

The Battling Bishops tied the contest in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out double by Taylor Dickson. The line drive to center brought in Chelsea Denman, who singled and stole second.

Undaunted, the Student Princes regained the lead to start the fifth. Renee Lovett laced a triple to the warning track in center field. She scored on a line drive basehit to left by Mikaela Mitsch.

OWU responded with a two-out double by pinch hitter Phoebe Bush that scored pinch runner Taylor Day, knotting the game at 2-2.

Abbey McKee rocked her first home run of the day to lead off the sixth. McKee's blast was an arching homer to left. With one out, Taylor Hicks singled, then moved to second on a groundout. She scored on another two-out RBI single by Smego.

Still, Ohio Wesleyan was equal to the task, tying the game on a pair of solo home runs in the bottom of the sixth. Cori Long relieved Paige Atterholt and gave up back-to-back singles. Next, Amanda Boyle doubled to left center, scoring a pair.

Heidelberg was unable to answer in the seventh, falling 6-4.

GAME TWO – OHIO WESLEYAN 10 HEIDELBERG 9: Ohio Wesleyan opened up a 3-0 in the first with a mix of small ball and long ball. The first run scored on a throwing error by Kyleah Brey during a sacrifice bunt attempt. The first two outs were recorded on an unconventional double play, where Brey got an out at home on a squeeze, then Mitsch throwing to Zachrich at third where she tagged a runner trying to advance. With two outs, Lilly Gresh blasted a wind-aided two-run homer to left off of starter Erin Chapman. All three runs were unearned.

Heidelberg cut into the Bishops lead in the second when McKee lined her second home run of the day to left.

Ohio Wesleyan got the run back in the top of the second on a solo home run by Boyle, which knocked Chapman from the game. Reliever Abbie Finnell worked around a two-out walk to retire the side.

In the top of the third, Smego rocked a double off the wall in left center. A wild pitch pushed her to third, where she scampered home on another wild pitch.

OWU scored another unearned run in the fourth, taking a 5-2 lead into the fifth.

Heidelberg rallied for three in the top of the fifth, which started with a Mitsch single through the box. Zachrich sent a bouncer to third, but the throw to second went into right field. Brey reached on a throwing error, which brought in Mitsch. McKee plated another run with a sacrifice fly to right. Pinch runner Jordan Hux tied the game on a wild pitch.

However, as they seemed to do all day long, the Battling Bishops responded immediately. They scratched across a run in the bottom of the inning, taking a 6-5 lead.

Undeterred, Heidelberg answered in the top of the sixth. Lovett reached on a bunt single, then scored as Mitsch lofted a home run to left.

Heidelberg's lead was short lived, as OWU rebounded yet again. Ashley Day ripped a one-out double to left center, sending Finnell back to the dugout. Long came on for her second appearance of the day and gave up an infield single, which sent Day to third. Erin Ferguson tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left.

With one out in the top of the seventh, McKee scored the hat trick – hitting her third home run of the day. Randi Kelsey followed with a single up the middle. After a fielding error and a line out, Lovett served a single to left that brought in Kelsey.

Down 9-7, the Battling Bishops countered again, as they did all afternoon. Phoebe Bush led off with a home run to left, cutting the HU lead to 9-8. Long retired the next two batters, then had Kayla Richard down 1-2. Richard reached on an infield single, then moved to second on a single by Day. Denman reached on a fielding error after a 10-pitch at bat in which Long was ahead in the count 0-2. With the bases loaded, Ferguson pulled a double down the third base line, just inside the bag. Richard and Day scored the winning runs.

EXTRA BASES: The losses to OWU were the first time Heidelberg had been swept all season ... McKee's eight home runs are the most by a freshman in program history.

ON DECK: With rain in the forecast, Heidelberg is scheduled to host Otterbein on Saturday in the OAC finale. Saturday also marks the dedication day for Frann's Field, with the ceremony starting at noon. At 14-2 in the OAC, Heidelberg can clinch a share of the conference title with a win. With two wins, HU would guarantee itself the opportunity to host the four-team conference tournament, which begins on May 1.
