Box Score 2 BEREA, Ohio – On April Fool's Day, the Heidelberg University softball team was not fooling around in a doubleheader sweep of conference-rival Baldwin Wallace University. The Student Princes scored two runs in the first inning of both games, winning 4-2 and 6-1.
With the sweep, Heidelberg's record stands at 16-4, 5-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. The Yellow Jackets fall to 6-13, 0-6.
KEY STATS: Pitchers Paige Atterholt and Erin Chapman were stellar in the circle – combining to hold BW to three runs ... Abbey McKee and Kayla Zachrich each had three hits on the afternoon ... Heidelberg extended its winning streak to a season-high seven games.
GAME ONE – HEIDELBERG 4 BALDWIN WALLACE 2: The Student Princes struck for a pair in the top of the first thanks to a bit of wildness by BW starter Erica Morgan. Taylor Hicks drew a walk and Marissa Smego was hit by a pitch. Abbey McKee followed by ripping a double to the gap in left center, plating Hicks. After Morgan recorded two outs, she hit Kyleah Brey to load the bases. Randi Kelsey drew a walk to force home Smego.
The Yellow Jackets cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning thanks to two hits and two errors. Hicks limited the damage by catching a fly ball and firing to catcher Mikaela Mitsch, nabbing a runner trying to score.
Heidelberg scored twice more in the third inning. Lisa Simmons served a single to center which scored Mitsch and Kelsey.
With HU up 4-1 in the seventh, Darcy Daniels led off the bottom of the frame with a solo home run, but Paige Atterholt closed the game.
GAME TWO – HEIDELBERG 6 BALDWIN WALLACE 1: As they did in the opener, the Student Princes hit the gas pedal early in the nightcap. Kayla Zachrich doubled home Smego and Brey followed with an RBI infield single, scoring Mitsch.
After game two starter Erin Chapman threw a 1-2-3 first, the Tricolor pushed across another run on a Smego sacrifice fly, scoring Christine Bowling.
Following an RBI groundout by Smego in the fourth, McKee blasted her third home run of the season. The two-run shot scored Hicks and gave HU a 6-0 lead.
The six-run cushion was more than enough for Chapman who had an impressive game after a couple of shaky outings. She allowed one unearned run in the sixth, but was in control throughout. She fanned four.
EXTRA BASES: At 16-4, Heidelberg has tied its best 20-game start in program history. The 2011 team also started 16-4 ... The Student Princes sit in a three-way tie atop the OAC standings. John Carroll and Capital are also 5-1 ... The four hits in the first game was Heidelberg's lowest total of the season ... Heidelberg has scored in the first inning in five of its last six games.
UP NEXT: The Student Princes put their perfect 4-0 home record on the line as they welcome Mount Union to Frann's Field on Friday. The first pitch of the twinbill is slated for 1 p.m.
