Homoki's two goals lift Men's Soccer past BW

Box Score

TIFFIN – The Heidelberg University men's soccer team picked up its first conference win on Tuesday, upending Baldwin Wallace University, 3-1. The victory snapped a five-match winless streak for the Student Princes, who improved to 3-6-3 overall, 1-1 in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Baldwin Wallace slipped to 4-7-2, 1-1 in the OAC.

FIRST HALF

Jay Sato put Heidelberg on the board with a goal in the 24th minute. Sebastian Calderon played a cross in to the penalty area from the right side. Sato put it in out of the air for his first collegiate goal.

In the 35th minute, Ryan Homoki tallied his first goal of the season. The senior captain cleaned up a rebound in the box, giving Heidelberg a 2-0 lead.

SECOND HALF

The Yellow Jackets answered to start the second half. In the 52nd minute, Brian Sposit headed in a ball off a corner kick. The goal was Sposit's first of the season and cut Heidelberg's lead in half.

Heidelberg weathered the early storm by Baldwin Wallace and settled into a possession battle for the next 15 minutes. In the 69th minute, Isaac Bwayo danced along the end line and found Homoki in the box. Homoki's strike was on target, giving the Student Princes a 3-1 lead.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

Homoki's two goals brought his career total to 12. He is second among active players in goals scored, trailing Chris Koczak's 33.

Tuesday was the second multi-goal game for Homoki. The other came in a 3-2 OAC tournament loss to Mount Union in 2013.

Heidelberg held an 18-15 edge in shots. Heidelberg goalkeeper Alex Archambeau made two saves in the game while his BW counterpart Zach Haynes had five.

Archambeau improved to 2-1-1 in his first start in exactly one month.

QUOTES

Head coach Ryan Carruth on the win: "It was really good to get the result today. We've been playing some really good football, having a lot of possession and creating good chances, especially in our last few games...today, to put it together and score three goals and to play pretty good soccer out there feels very good. The fact that the boys never stopped to feel sorry for themselves during this tough stretch is a testament to the resilience and strength of character of these young men."

Carruth on Ryan Homoki: "Ryan Homoki bleeds Heidelberg orange. He's a guy that cares very much about his team, about the program, and about his teammates. I'm thrilled for Ryan, coming back from an injury, that he took his two goals. It was well-deserved for him."

UP NEXT
