Women's soccer opens up OAC action with win

Box Score

TIFFIN, Ohio - The afternoon began with scattered showers and a 15 minute rain delay but concluded with the Heidelberg women's soccer team claiming their first Ohio Athletic Conference win of the 2013 season.

"I think our girls came out and felt the nerves a little bit in the first half knowing it was our first OAC match of the year," said eighth year head coach Nick Spell.

The first half would pass without a goal from either side even though Heidelberg did take an advantage in the shot count with five in the first half.

The first goal of the contest came on a brilliant shot from freshman Natalie Bennett. In the 64th minute, Bennett footed the ball outside of the 18-yard box and blasted a long shot attempt over the Marietta keeper and in.

"Natalie came to us as a defender and we have been able to work her around in our system," said Spell. "It was nice to see her get her first collegiate goal tonight."

The goal marks the first of her college career in the tri-color.

With a one goal lead, the Student Princes found another goal, this time from sophomore defender Jeanette Jinkinson. Jinkinson footed the ball in the six-yard box off of a deflection and booted it into the twine for her first goal of the 2013 season.

"Jeanette also came in to the program as a defender and she has been moved around a lot because she is so versatile," said Spell. "She battled in the box and found the net in the end."

As a unit, the Heidelberg offense outshot the Pioneers 15-3.

The victory sends the Berg ladies to 2-8-1 overall and to a 1-0-0 OAC record.

The Heidelberg women will continue OAC competition on Tuesday, October 8 when they travel to Wilmington, Ohio. The Student Princes will battle the Quakers of Wilmington College at 7:00 p.m.
